Briefly describe the difference between health and wellness*
Health is considered an objective measure, whereas wellness is a person’s subjective experience of being healthy
Briefly describe the difference between disease and illness*
Disease is the physiological deviation from normal and is considered objective & measurable, whereas illness is a person’s subjective experience of living with disease
Define health*
A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Describe emotional, occupational, and intellectual wellness*
Emotional - understanding feelings, managing and/or controlling those feelings, appropriately expressing feelings
Occupational - value placed on work, paid vs. volunteer, satisfaction
Intellectual - attainment of knowledge, realization of creative potential, seek stimulating activities to ensure growth of self
Describe physical, sexual, and spiritual wellness*
Physical - efforts at sustaining states of health, lifestyle choices, diet/exercise, self-care
Sexual - sexuality, sexual function, intimacy and respectful relationships, safety, cultural context
Spiritual - holistic view of the individual, sense of meaning for life, relationships with self/others/nature/higher beings
Describe environmental and social wellness*
Environmental - use of and need for natural resources, clean air/water/land, food security, population, urbanization, industrialization, impacts of climate change
Social - relationships with others, friends, family, roles and boundaries, communities
