Functions of organelles Flashcards
How do plant cells differ from animal cells?
Animal cells have centrioles, centrosomes, and lysosomes
Plant cells have cell walls, chloroplasts, large central vacuole, plastids
Nucleus
This is the control center of the cell.
Chloroplast
This is the site of photosynthesis in a plant cell.
Lysosomes
Protects the rest of the cell from its strong enzymes.
Mitochondria
Serves as the “powerhouse” of the cell.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Connects nuclear membrane to the cell membrane.
Ribosomes
Site for making proteins
Nucleolus
Part of the cell that manufactures ribosomes.
Vacuoles
Storage area inside the animal cell.
Golgi Apparatus
Area where proteins are sorted and packaged.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Accounts for more than half the total membrane in a cell.
Central Vacuole
The large structure in plant cells is filled with water and creates turgor pressure.
Cytoplasm
A portion of the cell that exists outside of the nucleus
Cell membrane
Controls what enters and leaves the cell.
Compare a mitochondria to a chloroplast. What do they do? What type of cell has them?
They are both found in a plant cell
Chloroplasts: Site for photosynthesis in a plant cell.
Mitochondria: Generates energy for cell.
