Elder self-neglect
Most common form of elder mistreatment. Includes:
1. Hoarding
2. Hygiene
3. House in need of repair
4. Unsanitary conditions
5. Inadequate utility
Risk factors for elder abuse
- Poor health
- Functional dependence
- Cognitive impairment
- Substance abuse
- Mental illness
- Financial dependency
Medicare Part A covers…
- Hospitalization (pt pays $1300 deductible) – physician visits billed under part B
- Post-acute rehab (SNF – 3 hours rehab per day - up to 100 days total w/copay)
- Home Healthcare (nurse visits, PT, OT, Speech, social work, health aide) – for 60 days
- Hospice – certified by 2 physicians and patient foregoes curative treatment
- Durable medical equipment
