Q

What does “parental” mean? And “recombinant”?

A

Parental:
combination of traits that is the same as the original parents,

recombinant:
combination of traits that is different from the original parents.

For example, if the parental plants have round yellow seeds and wrinkled green seeds, the parental offspring will have the same traits, while the recombinant offspring will have round green seeds or wrinkled yellow seeds.

Q

Enunciate the Principle of independent assortment and make an example

A

pairs of alleles segregate independently of one another during gamete formation

progeny is produced by the random combination of the gametes from the parents.

Example:
plant has two genes for seed shape (R, r) and seed color (Y, y), the alleles for each gene can be arranged in four possible gametes: RY, Ry, rY, or ry.
