What is the issue?
The center is crowded mostly on weekdays. This prohibits fluent traffic and challenges economic development. The quality of life of 30 million people is disrupted.
Other than traffic congestion, what problems are created?
Noise pollution results in less sleep, anxiety, depression, and coronary heart disease.
What can this congestion result in?
Outward migration of people. This however increases traffic congestion as people must travel into the city for jobs
What is done against the issue?
Charging scheme
- 2003
- went from 5 pounds up to 15 pounds as it wasn’t effective enough
What is the effect of fees?
Encourages public transport such as trains. Through more frequent use, net revenues are also used to improve public transport
More solutions to the issue, some that arent being done.
More bike and bus lanes
Traffic control/ pollice
Improvement in sidewalks (floor but also plants and decorations to encourage walking)
Designated no-car areas
Relocating offices and work sectors to outskirts of city
Why is traffic congestion an issue?
Because the streets have not been updated. They are old and tailored to minimal car use.
