Urbanisation Flashcards
Urbanisation
A process where an increasing proportion of the population lives in towns and cities
Factors Affecting the Rate of Urbanisation
Rate of population growth
Speed of economic development
Megacities
urban regions with over 10 million residents
Patterns of Urban Development
A central core:
the oldest part of a city
Home to the central business district (CBD) e.g. banks, retail and commercial offices
An inner-city ring:
also known as the twilight zone
Older, terraced ‘worker’ housing
Older industrial areas
Areas are centred around transport links and access
A suburban ring:
residential area
Semi and detached housing with gardens
Tree-lined avenues and cul-de-sacs
Smaller retail premises
An urban fringe:
outer edges of the city
Countryside is eroded through the urban spread
Housing is clustered into estates
Some industrial land use
Accessibility is best
Problems with rapid urbanisation
- Overpopulation (1)
- Shortage of housing (1)
- High demand for services (1)
- Development of squatter settlements (1)
- Increased air pollution
- Traffic congestion (1)
- Urban sprawl/loss of greenfield sites (1)
- High competition for jobs/growth of informal economy (1).
