the act of movement
what does the human skeleton involve?
bones, cartilage, and joints
what are bones?
hard and rigid tissue
what do bones do?
support and protect soft tissue, attachment site for muscles, and rbc & wbc production w/in marrow
what happens when a bone is formed?
a joint acts as a lever when attached muscle contracts
what is a cartilage?
fibrous and elastic tissue
what is cartilage as an embryo bone?
cartilage
what happens after birth for a cartilage?
the cartilage is gradually replaced by a bone
what does the cartilage provide?
cushioning and flexibility at joints
what are joints?
connection between bones
what do joints do?
they allow movement to be possible
what are the types of joints?
hinge joint, ball & socket joint, pivot joint, and immovable joint
what do hinge joints do?
back and forth (elbow & knee)
what do ball & socket joints do?
circular movement (shoulder & hip)
what do the pivot joints do?
1/2 circular movement (neck)
