1.5 Flashcards
What is role of a case study?
Provides a detailed picture of an individual based on interviews, observations, testing, and other information
What are the advantages and disadvatages of a case study?
advantages- useful when the condition being studied is rare.
Disadvantages- May provide biased results if indiviuals do not represent their groups
- Time and cost intesive
Naturalistic observation
Involved a systemic and unobtrusive observation of an individual (or group) in an everyday setting
What are the advantages and disadvantages of naturalistic observation
Advantages- Captures “real-world” behavior
Disadvatanges- May be difficult to unobtrusively observe the behavior of interest.
Behavior of interest also may be rare
Time and cost intensive
Involves a systemic observation o an individual (or group) in setting designed to elicit the behavior of interest
Laboratory observation
Uses a set of questions that is intended to elicit responses from a sampe of individuals, usually pertaining to attitudes, values, or behaviors
Questionnaire or survey
Advantages of questionnaire or survey
Large amounts of data can be collected with relative ease
- Sampling ensures that the data are representative of the population
Disadvantages-Questionnaire or survey
-Indivduals may misrepresent themselves, either intentionally or due to bias
- Questions may be misleading or have multiple interpretations
Uses a set of questions or problems designed to assess an individuals abilities or traits
Psychological testing
Advantages of and disadvatanges of psychological testing
Advantages (2)- Important dimensions of human behavior can be measured.
- Intelligence and personality have an important impact on development
Disadvantages- tests must be accurate
Not all important variables are subject to testing
Correlation is the
Measurement of two variables and two statistical calculation that described the relationship of the variable to each other
Advantages and disadvantages of correlation
Ad- Can identify important relationships among variables of interest
Disadvantages- cannot be used to infer the cause and effect
Experimenter manipulates independent vairable under study, with results measured on dependent variable
Experiment
Experiment advantages and disadvantages
Ad- can be used to explore cause and effect relationship
- Provides the esperimenter with good control over experimental conditions
Disadvantages- may be impossible to manipulate the indepentdet variable of interest. Quasi experiments can sometimes be used
- May be ethical limitation on what researc questions can be investigated
