Shearing chest injury
Sudden deceleration and seatbelt related injuries
Flail chest
Two or more consecutive ribs broken in two or more places
Flutter valve
Allows air to escape chest if pressure builds up
Pneumothorax
Air accumulates between lung and chest wall, collapsing lung
Tension pneumothorax
Buildup of air so severe there is pressure on heart and vena cava
Prevents heart from filling and kinks vena
Traumatic asphyxia
Sudden compression of chest
Sternum and ribs force blood out of heart into neck veins
Cardiac tamponade
Injury to heart causes blood to fill pericardial sac, compressing heart
Backs up blood into veins
Neck veins
Narrowing blood pressure
Muffled heart sounds
Aka becks triad
Aortic injury
Chest, abdomen, or back pain
Signs of shock
Differences in pulse pressure between sides of body or appendages
Commotio cordis
Physical trauma to chest occurs right when heart is electrically vulnerable
Cardiac arrest
Commonly injured and a lot of blood loss
Liver
Spleen also has blood loss
S&S of abdominal injury
Nausea
Weakness
Thirst
Distended abdomen
