201L - Engine Brake Systems Flashcards
What is the basic operation of a compression brake?
Exhaust valve is opened before TDC on compression stroke to release the compressed air instead of letting it act on the piston on the power stroke.
What 3 systems must work together to effectively operate the engine brake?
- Electrical
- Hydraulic
- Mechanical
201L pg. 4
After the engine brake control solenoid is opened, what is the flow of oil to operate the engine brake?
Flows through the solenoid, through the control valve, and into the passage between the master and slave cylinders. When the cam lobe presses on the master cylinder, the slave cylinder extends and opens the exhaust valve.
201L pg. 6
What check should be done prior to working on an engine brake complaint?
Check that the engine is performing adequately first. The engine brake requires good compression to work effectively.
201L pg. 9
The engine brake slave cylinder should only be adjusted after what else has been adjusted?
Exhaust valve lash
201L pg. 12
Where would exhaust brake valves be located?
Between turbo outlet and muffler
201L pg. 15
What are two main types of exhaust brake valve designs?
- Sliding valve
- Butterfly
