Define intrinsic motivation
-Intrinsically motivated athletes participate in sport for internal reasons, particularly enjoyment & satisfaction
-Typically these athletes focus on skill improvement & growth
Define extrinsic motivation
-May come from social sources, e.g. not disappointing parents or material rewards, e.g. trophies
-Extrinsically motivated athletes tend to focus on competitive or performance outcome
-Over-emphasis on extrinsic motivation may lead athletes to feel like their behaviour is controlled by extrinsic rewards
-Or, athletes may continue to feel they control behaviour even with presence of extrinsic rewards
Outline the advantages with an intrinsically motivated athlete
-Greater satisfaction
-Less stress when mistakes made
-Less distraction
-Increased confidence & self-efficacy
-Fewer changes (ups & downs) in motivation
Outline the disadvantages with an extrinsically motivated athlete
-Less interest, value & effort towards achievement
-Anxiety
-Difficulty coping with failure
