Offred is talking about the day she tried to flee the country with her family. She feels as though now she is shapeless, abstract and temporary. As Offred loses her family, she also loses herself.

A

Having activities/hobbies, owning possessions, being called by their named, having friends.

Prevents them from having identities outside of their procreative abilities.

What does Offred’s name mean?

A

“Of Fred” which symbolises that she is not her own person and she belongs to someone else.

“Red” - allusion to the red dress of the handmaids (tying her identity to a Handmaid)

“Offered’ - she is a sacrifice/offering
