managing coral reefs Flashcards
1
Q
protected areas + exclusion zones
A
- reducing activities that happen there
- by banning fishing/tourism/diving physical damage is decreased severely
- temp closes of these allow reefs to recuperate after stressful times e.g bleaching
2
Q
preventing and controlling invasive species/predators
A
- harmful if not watched, and can directly affect coral and ecosystem
- cleaning ships have disposal strategies which help limit transport of invasive species
- teams to remove predators (COTS) as they eat coral
3
Q
limiting global warming/ocean acidification
A
- in LR, large scale reef damage huge threat as worlds CO2 emissions too high
- if reduced emissions, lots of problems solved (SL rise, ocean acidification, global warming and so coral bleaching, diseases, invasive species)
- govt strats, greener energy and less reliance on fossil fuels all help lower CO2 emissions
4
Q
education and awareness
A
- educating those near reefs on how to interact with environment is v successful
- sustainable diving practises where effect limited e.g not stirring sediment when diving
- reduced anchoring damage by using buoys, and education f unsafe places to drop anchors
