1.6 Equilibria Flashcards
What is le chatiers principle
What does not affect the position of equilibrium
What does?
If a reaction at equilibrium is subjected to change, the position of equilibrium will move to counteract that change
A catalyst
Temperature, concentration of products and reactants and pressure
Define compromise
Balance between rate and yield
What compromise is needed in an equilibrium reaction?
Why?
Low temp high yield but low ror
High pressure high yield but high price of thick walls
Compromise is needed between them
Why is a catalyst used?
No effect on position of equilibrium
The forward and backward reaction are increased in speed
Equilibrium is reached faster
Money is saved
Define catalyst
A catalyst speed up a reaction by providing an alternative pathway with a lower activation energy while remaining chemically unchanged
Define dynamic equilibrium
Rate of forward reaction = rate of backwards reaction. Concentrations of reactants and products remain constant
