Q

What was Victorian (gender) convention?

A

Gender roles more sharply defined. Two sexes living in ‘seperate spheres’ and only coming together at breakfast and dinner. Women physically weak but morally strong and men were the opposite. Women must prepare the next generation. Women weren’t meant to pursue sexual satisfaction. Most men had sex with prostitutes and when they contracted syphilis they passed it on to their wives. The prostitute was the shadow that haunted the well-run middle-class home. Unlike the wives a prostitute was a worker in the economic marketplace.
