1.9 Central Nervous System Flashcards
What is the CNS composed of
Brain and spinal cord
What is the brain comprised of
Forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain
What is the forebrain comprised of
Cerebral hemispheres and diencephalon
What is the hindbrain comprised of
Pons, medulla and cerebellum
Brainstem comprised of
Midbrain pons and medulla
Frontal lobe function
Regulating and initiating motor function, language, cognitive functions
Examples of cognitive functions
Attention, memory, executive function (planning)
Parietal lobe function
Sensation (touch, pain)
Sensory aspects of language
Spatial orientation
Self-perception
Temporal lobe function
Processing auditory information
Occipital lobe function
Processing visual information
Limbic lobe
Includes the amygdala, hippocampus, mammillary body and cingukate gyrus
Concerned with learning, memory, emotion, motivation and reward
Insular cortex lobe
Lies deep within the lateral fissure ( frontal and temporal gap)
Concerned with visceral sensations, autonomic control, interception, auditory processing, visual- vestibular integration
(Feel and sense inside the the body e.g. hunger)
Meninges
3 layers - dura, pia and arachnoid
Dura mater
Thick
2 layers - periostea, (periosteum layer) and meninges (durable, dense fibrous membrane)
Arachnoid
Thin transparent membrane
Pia mater
Thin, translucent and mesh like
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
Produce in the choroid plexus of lateral (hemisphere) third and fourth centricles
Occupies ventricular system and sub arachnoid space
Reabsorbed by arachnoid villi into superior Sagittal sinus
CSF vs Plasma
CSF has lower pH, less glucose, protein and potassium
How many cervical vertebrae
7
How many cervical nerves
8 pairs
