What is the YALTA conference?
It’s when Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin met in YALTA to decide what happens to post-war Germany
What gets decided at the YALTA conference?
Russia agreed to enter the war against Japan following German Surrender, Germany would be divided into 4 (Russia, UK, America and France) and Berlin will be divided into 4
What did they disagree at YALTA?
Stalin wanted Germany to pay for USSR reparations and wanted payments in coal
After YALTA, what did Russia do against what was planned?
They forced Germans to sell food and raw materials to the Soviet Union and some German factories dismantled and moved to the USSR
What happened at Potsdam?
July 1945, Truman, Attlee and Stalin decide what happens to Germany after war
Why is Truman against Russia/ Stalin?
Because he was anti communist and suspicious of Stalin
What was the Atomic Bomb?
It was when the Americans successfully developed the atomic bomb the day before Potsdam and after Japan refused to surrender they dropped a bomb on Hiroshima on August 6th
What are the key agreements of Potsdam?
Germany would be divided like said at YALTA, The Nazi party was banned and seen as war criminals, Germans living in Poland, Hungary and Czechsoslavakia were to be returned to Germany and Poland was to lose some east territory to Russia
1947, What is the Truman Doctrine?
Truman made a speech to US Congress which he said about that he believed communism was a threat as it needs to be contained
What was containment of Communism?
The prevention of further spread of communism
What was the Marshall plan?
Truman sent Marshall to Europe where he visited many paces to come up with a plan for containment and estimated it would be £17 billion
What is Cominform?
Its a organisation to co-ordinate the various communist governments in Eastern Europe made by Stalin where he told them about what the Soviet Union wanted them to do
What does Cominform stand for?
The Communist Information Bureau
What is Comecon?
It’s to co-ordinate the industries and trades of Eastern European counties that the members of Comecon traded mostly with another instead of the west and it favoured the USSR
