1st gp test Flashcards
how does size effect the cell
It’s harder for nutrients and gases to move into the cell.
what are the three different domains
bacteria, archaea, eukarya
four macromolecules
lipids
proteins
carbohydrates
nucleic acids
macromolecules monomers
carbohydrate – monosaccharides
lipids– triglyceride
proteins– amino acid
nucleic acid– polynucleotide
monosaccharides
glucose
fructose
galactose
disaccharides
sucrose and lactose
difference between saturated and unsaturated fats
in saturated fatty acids there are no double bonds between the individual carbon atoms
in unsaturated there is at least one
when a protein is denatured
secondary and tertiary structures are altered but the peptide bonds of the primary structures are left in tact
the protein can no longer perform its function
carbon chemistry
the use of carbon to bond with itself or other elements in chemical reactions
why is carbon important
it can form stable bonds with lots of elements
stanley millers 1953 experiment
found out that several organic compounds could be formed spontaneously by simulating the conditions of Earth’s early atmosphere
what are valence electron, y r they significant
Valence electrons are those electrons farthest away from the nucleus of an atom. They are important in chemistry because they are responsible for determining the chemical behavior of an atom
what are waters properties
polarity, cohesion, adhesion, surface tension, high specific heat, and evaporative cooling. A water molecule is slightly charged on both ends. This is because oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen.
waters bonding properties
bonded by covalent bonds, some hydrogen bonds
