1
Q

What are the three principal regions of a neuron? Which part contains the nucleus?

A

Q

Where in the neuron are macromolecules produced?

Q

What are the two subcategories of the nervous system?

A

Central nervous system (CNS): Including the brain and spinal cord.

Peripheral nervous system (PNS): Includes the cranial nerves arising from the brain and the spinal nerves arising from the spinal cord.

Q

What is the difference between the CNS and PNS?

A

The peripheral nervous system or PNS contains the nerves, which leave the brain and the spinal cord and travel to certain areas of the body. The peripheral nervous system’s main job is to send information gathered by the body’s sensory receptors to the CNS as quickly as possible.

Q

Even though the axon of a motor neuron is connected TO the hamstring muscle, where is it’s cell body located?

A

Back in the CNS. It’s axon extends out into the PNS to the muscle. Some neuron axon lengths can be a meter long.

11
Q

What are sensory neurons?

A

They pick up information about what’s going on inside and outside of the body, and then bring that back to the CNS. Fingers feeling a hot surface are an example.

Q

What are motor neurons?

A

They get information from other neurons and convey commands to your muscles, organs and glands. For instance, if you picked up a hot coal, motor neurons in the muscles in your fingers would cause your hand to let go.

Q

What are interneurons?

A

They receive information from other neurons (either sensory neurons or interneurons) and transmit information to other neurons (either motor neurons or interneurons).

Q

When did Gregor Mendel live?

A

1822 - 1884,

17
Q

Who is Gregor Mendel?

A

Gregor Mendel was an Austrian monk who discovered the basic principles of heredity through experiments in his garden (peas). Mendel’s observations became the foundation of modern genetics and the study of heredity, and he is widely considered a pioneer in the field of genetics

18
Q

What is Great Man Theory?

A

The Great Man theory is a 19th-century idea according to which history can be largely explained by the impact of “great men”, or heroes; highly influential individuals who, due to either their personal charisma, intelligence, wisdom, or political skill used their power in a way that had a decisive historical impact.

19
Q

What is galvanization? How is is typically done?

A

The process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron, to prevent rusting. The most common method is hot-dip galvanizing, in which parts are submerged in a bath of molten zinc.
