2 Flashcards
What are the three principal regions of a neuron? Which part contains the nucleus?
Cell body, dendrites, and an axon. The cell body contains the nucleus.
Where are macromolecules?
A very large type of molecule, like proteins, often composed of thousands of atoms or more.
Where in the neuron are macromolecules produced?
The nucleus, located in the cell body. It is the nutritional center of neuron.
What are the two subcategories of the nervous system?
Central nervous system (CNS): Including the brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral nervous system (PNS): Includes the cranial nerves arising from the brain and the spinal nerves arising from the spinal cord.
What is the difference between the CNS and PNS?
The peripheral nervous system or PNS contains the nerves, which leave the brain and the spinal cord and travel to certain areas of the body. The peripheral nervous system’s main job is to send information gathered by the body’s sensory receptors to the CNS as quickly as possible.
What is a cluster of cell bodies in the CNS (central nervous system) called?
Nuclei. NOTE: NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH PLURAL NUCLEUS
What is a cluster of cell bodies in the PNS (peripheral nervous system) called?
Ganglia.
Even though the axon of a motor neuron is connected TO the hamstring muscle, where is it’s cell body located?
Back in the CNS. It’s axon extends out into the PNS to the muscle. Some neuron axon lengths can be a meter long.
The axons of peripheral neurons that travel a common route are bundled together to form ____?
Nerves
What are the three classes of neurons?
Sensory neurons, Motor neuron, and Interneurons.
What are sensory neurons?
They pick up information about what’s going on inside and outside of the body, and then bring that back to the CNS. Fingers feeling a hot surface are an example.
What are motor neurons?
They get information from other neurons and convey commands to your muscles, organs and glands. For instance, if you picked up a hot coal, motor neurons in the muscles in your fingers would cause your hand to let go.
What are interneurons?
They receive information from other neurons (either sensory neurons or interneurons) and transmit information to other neurons (either motor neurons or interneurons).
What are the most common type of neuron?
Interneurons
How many vaginas do kangaroos have?
- One in the middle for birthing the, and one on either side of it for sperm delivery. to one of two uteruses.
