2 – Dog Digestive Tract Flashcards
Peritoneum:
-mesothelium supported by loose connective tissue (serosa)
-simple squamous epithelium
Parietal peritoneum:
-serosa lining wall of abdominal, pelvic, and scrotal cavities
Visceral peritoneum:
-serosa covering organs suspended in abdominal and pelvic cavities
Connecting peritoneum:
-double sheet of peritoneum connecting parietal and visceral peritoneum OR regions of visceral peritoneum
*uninterrupted
Greater omentum:
-large apron-like fold of visceral peritoneum that hangs down from the stomach
-from greater curvature of stomach to transverse colon
Peritoneal cavity:
-enclosed by parietal and visceral peritoneum
-surrounds suspended organs
Intraperitoneal:
-not actually in peritoneal cavity
-surrounds it and covered by visceral peritoneum
Ex. jejunum
Retroperitoneal:
-behind the parietal peritoneum
-covered by peritoneum only on one side
Ex. kidneys, aorta (in dog)
What are the functions of the digestive system?
-reception
-storage
-mechanical reduction
-chemical digestion
-absorption
-elimination of unabsorbed residues
What are the components of the digestive system?
-digestive (alimentary, GI) tract
-glands
What are the components of the digestive tract?
-mouth
-pharynx (oropharynx, laryngopharynx)
-esophagus
-stomach
-SI
-LI
What are the glands of the digestive system?
-salivary glands
-liver
-pancreas
What are the 4 layers of tubular organs?
-tunica mucosa
-tela submucosa
-tunica muscularis
-tunica serosa/adventitia
Tunica mucosa:
-epithelium
-supported by connective tissue
Tela submucosa:
-connective tissue
Tunica muscularis:
-smooth or skeletal muscle
Digestive tract epithelium: stratified squamous
-lips to esophagus to anal canal
-non-keratinized and keratinized regions
*lots of cells and glands that produce mucus
What are examples the non-keratinized regions of the digestive tract epithelium?
-lips
-proximal anal canal
What are examples the keratinized regions of the digestive tract epithelium?
-hard palate
-tongue
-distal anal canal
What are examples the non-keratinized and keratinized regions of the digestive tract epithelium?
-cheeks
-oropharynx
-laryngopharynx
-esophagus
