2 ecological processes Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
A chemical reaction that changes solar energy to chemical energy (food for plants)
What is cellular respiration?
A chemical reaction that converts stored energy into useful energy
Example - For growth and movement
Word equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water = sunlight/chlorophyll = glucose + oxygen
What is chlorophyll?
A green pigment used in photosynthesis to make glucose
What are chloroplasts?
Structures in plants that capture the sunlight used in photosynthesis
Word equation for cellular respiration
Glucose + Oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + energy
Which process includes the usage of energy to perform functions like movement?
Cellular respiration
Similarity between the 2 processes
They both involve the same chemicals
What are complementary processes?
The reactions of photosynthesis and cellular respiration are opposite from each other
Since plants can capture the energy of sunlight in photosynthesis, why do they need cellular respiration?
To extract the energy from the sugars they produce – need the energy for cellular processes
Suppose a plant could perform photosynthesis but it lost the ability to perform cellular respiration. Explain what would happen to the plant and why.
The plant would die – it needs cellular respiration in order to extract the energy from the sugars it produces (for cellular processes)
Which reaction occurs in only plants?
Photosynthesis
Which reaction occurs in both plants and animals?
Cellular respiration
Which process absorbs energy?
Photosynthesis
Which process releases energy?
Cellular respiration
