2014 - Chapter 1 Flashcards
Qualitative variable
. A variable that does not assume a numerical value but is usually classified into categories. Also called a categorical value
A characteristic of an element, which can assume different values for different elements.
Variable
The collection of elements from the target population that had a chance of being sampled
Potential population
Selection bias
Occurs when the population from which the actual sample is drawn is not representative of the target population
The set of values of all variables for a given element
Observation
Observation
The set of values of all variables for a given element
Potential population
The collection of elements from the target population that had a chance of being sampled
The elements in a statistical study from which the data are drawn
Subjects
A sample in which every element has an equal chance of being included
Random sample
A characteristic of a sample
Statistic
Experimental study
A statistical study where researchers investigate how varying the predictor variable affects the response variable.
The collection of all elements (persons, items, or data) of interest in a particular study. (1 word)
Population
A specific entity on which information is collected
Element
Continuous Variable
A quantitative variable that can take an infinite number of possible values
Random sample
A sample in which every element has an equal chance of being included
Statistic
A characteristic of a sample
A statistical study where researchers investigate how varying the predictor variable affects the response variable.
Experimental study
A characteristic purported to explain differences in the response variable
Predictor variable
Quantitative variable
. A variable that takes numerical values
Statistical inference
Methods for estimating and drawing conclusions about population characteristics based on the information contained in a subset (sample) of that population
