What was the FRG’S main focus on in the 1950s?
Rebuilding the government and woking together in useful coalitions.
What were the bigger issues in the 1950s other than political dissent?
- Building sense of identity and leaving room for unification with East Germany. 2.Rebuilding economy and physically rebuilding the country. 3. Establishing FRG as a member of Europe.
What is basic law?
It was the constituion of the FRG.
When was the basic law approved?
8 May 1949 in Bonn.
What did the basic law allow?
Free speech, free press and no censorship.
Why did the KPD begin demonstrations?
They were unable to win enough seats in Budestag to feel represented.
How many communists were involved in the demonstrations in Munich 1953?
6,000 communists clashed with police.
Why had there been protests against the FRG’s military?
Their involment with the west through NATO and the possibility of building and storing atomic weapons in FRG
What happened to the economy in 1960?
The economy improved greatly this was referred to as an “economic miracle”.
What was the Ausserparlamentarische Opposition (APO)?
Group consisting of young intellectuals, many students or young professionals.
Why did APO form?
Because of the distrust for the constitutional government and because no other left wing parties after KPD banned.
What did the Year zero do?
Helped Adenaur rebuild civil service.
The SPD revised their policies to be less radical, how did that effect political extremism?
Violent political protests became more frequent again.
Who were the SDS?
SDS we?re apart of SPD but broke away in 1961.
Why did SDS break away from the SPD?
They felt the SPD were becoming less radical - no longer represented feelings over rearmament.
