Q

What happens when you plug an SCBA into the URC (UAC) fitting?

A

It transfills between SCBAs - but that equalizes pressure.

Q

Explain the concept of SCBA (how does the system work?)

A

SCBA consists of a facepiece connected to a second stage regulator, connected by a low pressure hose to the first stage regulator, which is connected to an air cylinder filled with compressed air mounted to a backpack with a harness connected to the wearer.

The respiratory system reduces the air pressure to user’s regulator (high to low) using the first and second stage regulators.

The face piece attaches to the second stage regulator to maintain positive pressure inside the mask at all times .

Q

Name the components of an SCBA and detail their use?

A
  1. backpack
  2. harness
  3. air cylinder
  4. pressure gauge - reduces the high pressure air from the cylinder to a lower pressure
  5. first stage regulator - keeps the pressure to the mask-mounted regulator at approximately 80 psi throughout the entire operating pressure range of the cylinder.
  6. second stage regulator - this is a pressure demand regulator, which keeps a positive pressure in the face-piece at all times.
  7. purge valve
  8. LEDs
  9. low air alarm - tells the user that the end of the breathing air supply of oxygen is approaching.
  10. high pressure hose
  11. low pressure hose
  12. buddy breather system
  13. UAC

Q

For daily maintenance and inspection - what are you looking for in a functional check?

A physical damage check?

A

Harness Check

  • Conditions of Straps, Buckles, Backplate.
  • Straps can be fully extended, not damaged, belts can be connected.
  • Button snap at top is in place.
  • Adjust lumbar support to wherever you need it to be.

Operational Check

  1. Cylinder pressure (PSI) - both gauges
  2. Bottle condition
  3. High pressure hose coupled to cylinder
  4. Operation of low pressure alarm
  5. Operation of pass alarm
  6. Bypass function
  7. Pressure function
  8. Low air (pack) alarm
  9. Buddy breather correctly packed

Mask Check

  1. Regulator
  2. Exhalation Valve is clean and unobstructed
  3. General condition
  4. Cleanliness

Physical Damage - check complete unit for:

  • Cracks
  • Cuts
  • Abrasions (esp fiberglass wrap on air cyllinder)
  • Dents
  • Missing Parts
  • Thermal damage
