Local anesthetic

  • Also an anti-arrhythmic
  • IV use for local analgesia
    • Causes additional CNS depression and increased GI motility in horses
    • Interferes with glutamate action at NMDA receptors
    • Interferes with sodium potassium channels in spinal chord
    • Cats don’t metabolize as well as dogs–> greater cardiovascular effects

  • Slower onset, but long duration of action
    • Selectivity for sensory nerves
    • If over dose high enough to get cardiovascular effects, hard to save patients
