2a Flashcards
interdependence
all organisms interact with other organisms around them and the nonliving parts of their environment
ecology
study of relationships between living and non living things of the world
abiotic
non living
biotic
living
levels of organization
organism population community ecosystem biome biosphere
ecosystem
all organisms in a given area and the abiotic factors that affect it
habitat
place an organism lives out its life
niche
role and position a species has in it’s environment
predation
more predators more prey
more prey more food for predators
competition
populations must compete for resources
pop grows-> resources in high demand
then pop must decrease if demand greater than supply by less reproduction and killing each other
symbiotic relationship
between organisms of two different species that live together in direct contact
commensalism
one organism benefits and the other is not affected
examples are Spanish moss and barnacles
mutualism
both organisms benefit
examples are Acacia trees and bacteria in humans
parasitism
one organism benefits and the other is harmed
some live within the host like tapeworm and bacteria
some feed on the external surface of the host like fleas
most do not kill the host
