Q

What is ionic bonding?

A

The transfer of electrons to form positively or negatively charged atoms called ions. It is an electrostatic attraction between a metal and a non metal. The metal donates their electrons.

Q

Do ionic compounds have high or low melting/boiling points?

A

High due to the very strong bonds between ions. It takes a lot of energy to break the bonds.

Q

Why do ionic compounds only conduct electricity when aqueous or molten ?

A

When they are solid they have strong bonds and are in fixed positions so electricity can’t flow through it. However when it’s molten the bonds are weaker so the ions are free to move meaning electricity can flow through.

Q

How do you do the precipitate reaction?

A

Add a salt to distilled water then shake to make sure it’s dissolved. Do the same to another salt. Then add both solutions to a beaker. Then put filter paper in a funnel in a conical flask and pour the contents of the beaker onto the filter paper. wash. dry. (Filter wash dry)

19
Q

How do u test for a chloride ion?

A

Quarter fill a test tube with sodium chloride solution. Add a few drops of nitric acid, then shake gently. Add a few drops of silver nitrate solution, then shake. Produces white precipitate.

20
Q

How do u test for sulphate ions?

A

Quarter fill a test tube with sodium sulphate solution. Add hydrochloride acid then shake gently. Add barium chloride solution, then shake. Produces white precipitate.

22
Q

How do u test for carbonate ions?

A

Quarter fill test tube with sodium carbonate solution. Add hydrochloric acid then bubble through limewater it will go cloudy.
