Sound Flashcards
(21 cards)
What materials does sound travel through better?
Solids and liquids
What vibrates in a speaker?
The paper cone.
What happens when you band a tuning fork and then do it on a table?
It gets louder because the sound is vibrating thought the table as well.
What does sound travel in
Waves
In the slinky experiment how do we know which is compression and which is refraction?
The closer the coils are is compression the further is refraction.
What happens when the sound reaches you?
They vibrate through your eardrums exactly how they did in the speaker.
What measurement do we measure sound in?
Decibel (db)
How much is a increase of ten decibels.
Twice as much
What is frequency?
How high or low a sound is.
What is frequency measured in?
Hertz (Hz)
What happens as you get older?
You can’t hear higher frequency’s
What happens when sound hits a surface?
It reflects.
How do echoes happen?
The sound Is being reflected back and forth.
What is ultra sound?
A sound which is above 22 000 Hz
How is ultra sound used in baby scans?
The sound reflects off the tissue of the baby and gives us a picture of what it looks like.
How fast does sound travel?
300 m/s in air
How can you measure the depth of water using sound?
You measure how long the sound takes to reach the bottom which is time divided by speed.
What does there need to be for sound to be there?
A material for the sound to vibrate through, that’s why in space you can’t hear anything
What type of waves are sound waves?
Longitudinal
What part of the ear collects the sound?
The pinna
What is the amplitude of the sound?
The maximum height of the wave, how loud or quiet it is.
