4.3: Carbohydrates Flashcards
What are the other names of carbohydrates?
Saccharides / sugars
What elements are in carbohydrates?
Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Has carbonyl group and multiple hydroxyl groups
What are the examples of carbohydrates?
Sugar, glycogen, starch, and cellulose
Give two functions of carbohydrates
- Sugar - an accessible source and store of energy in humans and animals
- Starch - common as food storage in plants
What are disaccharide carbohydrates?
Maltose, sucrose, galactose
What are polysaccharide carbohydrates?
Starch, glycogen, cellulose
What are the descriptions of monosaccharide carbohydrates?
- The simplest carbohydrates, cannot be hydrolysed
- All are reducing sugars
What are the chemical properties of monosaccharide carbohydrates?
- Sweet
- Are solid crystalline
- Soluble in water
- Has a low molecular mass
What are the descriptions of disaccharide carbohydrates?
Consists of two monosaccharides linked by a glycosidic bond (C-O-C) by condensation
What are the chemical properties of disaccharide carbohydrates?
- Small, sweet
- Solid crystalline
- Soluble in water
What is the function of maltose?
Malt sugar in germinating barley grains
What is the function of sucrose?
Sugar cane; main sugar form that is transported in plants
What is the function of lactose?
Milk sugars; found in the milk of mammals and are a source of energy
What is a reducing sugar?
Sugar that can reduce Cu2+ ion into Cu+
Give examples of reducing sugars and non-reducing sugars
Reducing sugars: monosaccharides, maltose, lactose
Non-reducing sugars: sucrose
