Periods Flashcards
Protogeometric period 1050-900 BCE
Change from inhumation to cremation, amphora, onoichoe, lekythos all make first appearances, pots were simple with deocrative bands, usually concentric circles.
Example of Protogeometric pot
Protogeometric amphora from the 10th cent BCE, from Athens.
Geometric period 900-700
Emergence of the polis, development of state religion, development of the alphabet, expansion of Greek world through trade and colonisation.
Early geometric period 900-850

Orientalising period, 700-600 - Corinth
First city to break out of the geometric style and developed a new style in 720. They have trading contacts with Syria and exported widely in the Greek world, they are usually miniature decorations.
Orientalising - Athens
Developed new style in 700; a prottoattic style (precursor to black-figure) which are grander, inventive, fewer animals and rarely exported out of Attica.
Example of prottoattic style
Analos amphora which depicts Sphinxes, a choral dance and a chariot precession. Painted by the Analatos painter in 690 BCE with a height of 80 cm.
