Protogeometric period 1050-900 BCE

A

Change from inhumation to cremation, amphora, onoichoe, lekythos all make first appearances, pots were simple with deocrative bands, usually concentric circles.

A

Revived contacts with the east, decorations tend to cover entire surface of the pot, animals are painted more frequently and we start to see humans on vases; first narratives.

Late Geometric period, 760-700

A

Dominated by funeral vases and narratives will generally correspond to this. Vases are adorned by everyday life, still geometric motifs, figures depicted in a dark glossy, wile the rest is covered by swastikas and such.

Orientalising period, 700-600 - Corinth

A

First city to break out of the geometric style and developed a new style in 720. They have trading contacts with Syria and exported widely in the Greek world, they are usually miniature decorations.

A

Developed new style in 700; a prottoattic style (precursor to black-figure) which are grander, inventive, fewer animals and rarely exported out of Attica.

Analos amphora which depicts Sphinxes, a choral dance and a chariot precession. Painted by the Analatos painter in 690 BCE with a height of 80 cm.

Middle Prottoattic (black and white style) example

A

The Eleusis Amphora. It is the name vase of the Polyphemus painter. It shows the blinding of Polyohemus and the Gorgons pursuing Perseus. It is from the Sanctuary of Demeter at Eleusis, 660-650, height is 1.44m

Late Prottoattic (early black-figure) - Nessos Amphora

A

the name vase of the Nessos painter. It shows Nessos, Heracles and the Gorgons pursuing Perseus, the Gorgons ae doing the knielaufscheme, dated to 625-699 with a height of 1.22m

Shows deer hunt, attributed to the Evelyn painter, dated to around 720 BCE. It has a height of 6.8cm

A

Atrributed to the Macmillan painter/Chigi painter, it shows the Hoplite battle. It is dated to around 650-640 with a height of 6.9cm

A

Transitional protocorinthian olpe. Also attributed to the Macmillan painter. A Hoplite phalanx, judgement of Paris and a hare hunt. It was found in Veii, Etruria.
