Q

There are three advantages of parenteral injections we talked about. What are they?

A
  1. Patient good circulatory status= rapid, almost complete absorption of med
  2. Meds can be given parenterally even when there is GI disturbance
  3. The patient does not have to be conscious or rational to receive an injection

Q

Another disadvantage of parenteral med administration has to do with poor circulation. Explain.

A

If an IM injection is given where there is too poor blood circulation, it could result in the medication STAYING IN THE MUSCLE and being absorbed only when circulation improves

If several injections were given when circulation was impaired, inadequate medication may have been delivered during that time and the absorption of several doses later when circulation improves can result in OVERDOSE
