What was the reasons for the coming around of the Gang of four?

A

Mao had been leader of the CCP since the Long March and by the mid 70s it was clear to see that he was coming to the end of his life. Led to a struggle in power in the party as rivals fought to secure succession. It was how they came to importance.

Members were:
Zhang Chungqiao
Wang Hangwen
Yao Wenyuan
Jiang Qing

Rise of the Gang of Four during the cultural revolution when Jiang Qing launched the anti-Confucius campaign. On outside it was a campaign against the revisionists and to promote ideas of communism and practices. However it was an attack on Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping who they feared might become leader.

How did Deng Xiaoping become leader?

A

At end of trail they were all sentenced to life imprisonment. Removing opposition. Hua Guofeng thought he would became leader. Politburo thought him as a temporary leader. Deng emerged who had been brought back after being expelled from the party. He had support in party and military for important role in recovery of the Great famine and helped with industrial growth in the 70s. Deng had played an important role in developing China’s foreign policy. 1976 to 1978 Deng played a clever waiting game securing military support and developed his role within the party his position as paramount leader confirmed in Oct 1978
