5.1.1 How Fast? Flashcards
Define rate the rate of reaction?
Change in concentration of a reactant or product per unit time
How is the rate of reaction calculated?
Change in concentration of reactants or products/ time
What does it mean when the order is zero with respect to the reactants?
Changing concentration of the reactant has no effect on the rate
Describe what is meant when the order of reaction is first order?
Rate is directly proportional to concentration
What is meant when a reaction has a second order of reaction?
Change in rate = change in concentration is squared
What is the generalised rate equation and what does each term mean?
Rate = k [X]^m [Y]^n
K= rate constant doe equation
[X] & [Y] = concentration of reactants
M & n= orders respect to X & Y
Does zero order appear on the reactants in the rate equation?
No because they don’t have an effect on the rate
How do you calculate overall order of a reaction?
Sum of individuals orders
How are the units of the rate constant calculated?
- unit of rate= mol dm^-3 S^-1
- units of concerntration= mol dm^ -3
Rearrange rate equation to get k= sub units and cancel them
How could you measure the rate of reaction experimentally?
- use a colorimeter at suitable intervals if there is a colour change
-if gas is evolved use a gas syringe to collect volume of gas evolved, or measure the change in mass of the reaction mixture
What does half life mean?
Time taken for concentration of a reactant to decrease by half
What is the symbol for half life?
t 1/2
What does a concentration time graph for a zero order reactant?
Line is a straight line going in a downward direction
What does a concentration time graph for first order reactant look like?
Curved line in a downwards direction
Describe the relationship between first order reactions and half life?
Have constant half life’s
