9
Q

how does nuclear fission happen?

A

Fire a slow moving neutron to a nucleus to make the nucleus more unstable which causes a split of the nucleus into 2 lighter elements (daughter nucelli)

Q

What is nuclear fusion?

A

The joining of two atomic nucelli to form a larger one (release of energy, more than fission)

Q

Where can nuclear fusion occur?

A

In the sun as the high temperature and high pressure is only attainable there.

13
Q

What do the control rods do?

A

They absorb neutrons and reduce the rate of fission.
This is done by their depth being adjusted dependant on the control they want on the chain reaction.

Q

What do the fuel rods do?

A

contain fuel and can be very hot due to nuclear fission

16
Q

What does the concrete shield do?

A

Stops radiation from escaping

17
Q

What does the heat exchanger do?

A

Allows water to be converted into a high pressure stream

18
Q

What does the water as moderator and constant do?

A

It absorbs neutrons kinetic energy and slows them down to make further fission more likely.

Transfers fuel rods heat energy to the heat exchanger.
