Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Flashcards
Who’s theory is this?
American Psychologist, Abraham Maslow
What is the theory?
That we all have different layers of needs and that to go into the next layer we have to achieve the one we are currently on
What does the theory suggest?
Once people have their basic needs met like housing, food, safety, shopping, technology and a job they can go on to satisfy ‘higher needs’
What is the pyramid?
Basic needs are at the bottom and at the top is ‘self actualisation’- which describes a person who has gained the respect of a lot of other people- has a higher level of self esteem and self respect
What are the basic needs?
Physiological needs- food, water, warmth and rest
Safety needs- security and safety
What are the Psychological needs?
Belongingness and love needs- intimate relationships and friends
Esteem needs- prestige and feeling of accomplishment
What is the Self-fulfilment needs
Self actualisation- achieving ones full potential, including creative activities
What does his upper layer suggest?
Linked to the idea consuming particular media tracts fulfils self-esteem, as does buying certain products
In a nutshell
That if you buy a new pair of trainers of the right brand as shown to you in the media, then you will feel better about your self, because you have the respect of other people
