7th DAY SABBATH Flashcards

Q

7D1.) Which day of the weekly cycle was blessed and sanctified by GOD?

A

One of the strangest omissions in our modern life revolves around the calendar which hangs on the wall at your house and mine. Astronomy can supply most of the answers relating to the measurement of time, even when it touches the earliest years of human history. But even the calendar experts can give us no scientific reason for the division of time into seven day weekly cycles. Neither the stars, planets nor sun seem to provide any logical clues as to this arrangement of time. The days and months are based on predictable laws of planetary movements but why does our calendar today count days off in units of seven?

The Bible says that God created the world in seven days and established a divine command for all time to come — that mankind should so reckon his time by weeks. Here’s the text in Exodus 20:8-11: “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor and do all thy work. Butthe seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God; in it thou shalt not do any work, thou nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor the maidservant, nor they cattle, nor the stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that in them is and rested the seventh day, wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.”

Please notice that God Himself is the author of the calendar week of seven days. It has passed down to us from time immemorial, and was included in the most ancient forms of calendars, regardless of race or language. There can be little question that we are dealing with an arrangement which the Creator established in the very beginning of human history. And the most amazing thing is, that no time has been lost since God gave His command about keeping the seventh day Sabbath in honor of creation. What He commanded, He has enabled man to perform. Miraculously the same seven day weekly cycle has been preserved through the ages so that man might enjoy the spiritual blessing which was placed upon the seventh day in the beginning.

The 7th Day Sabbath was the ONLY day blessed and sanctified by God. The 7th Day Sabbath serves as a memorial to creation. Every time we rest upon the seventh day, as God did at creation, we commemorate that grand event. After the first six days of creation week, God rested on the seventh day.

This made the 7th day as God’s rest day, or Sabbath day . Sabbath day means rest day. To illustrate: When a person is born on a certain day, that day becomes his birthday. So when God rested upon the seventh day, that day became His rest, or Sabbath, day.

Therefore the seventh day must always be God’s Sabbath day. Can you change your birthday from the day on which you were born to one on which you were not born? No. Neither can you change God’s rest day to a day on which He did not rest. Hence the seventh day is still God’s Sabbath day.

Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day GOD ended His work which he had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then GOD blessed the seventh day and sanctified it because in it He rested from all His work which GOD had created and made.

Q

7D2.) Was the 7th Day Sabbath made for the Jews only?

A

No. The 7th Day Sabbath was made for every man. There were no Jews or nation of Israel at creation, nor in the garden of Eden. It is not a Jewish institution, for it was made 2,300 years before there ever was a Jew. The Bible never calls it the Jewish Sabbath, but always “the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.” The Sabbath was made for every man. The Sabbath existed and was followed before Sinai. The Nation of Israel was Instructed to keep the Sabbath before they got to Sinai.

Q

7D8.) Did the Apostles and early church keep the Sabbath?

A

YES! n the great Christian council, A.D. 49, in the presence of the apostles and thousands of disciples, James calls it the “sabbath day.” The apostle Paul himself expressly declared that he had kept the law. “Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all.” How could this be true if he had not kept the Sabbath?

ACTS 15:21

ACTS 25:8

But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down.
ACTS 13:14

So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath
ACTS 13: 42

On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of GOD.
ACTS 13:44

And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customerly made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there.
ACTS 16:13

And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and greeks.

Q

7D9.) Has GOD suspended the celebration of the Sabbath for the New Testament Church?

A

NO! Not a word is said anywhere in the New Testament about the Sabbath’s being abolished, done away, changed, or anything of the kind. There is no record that God has ever removed His blessing or sanctification from the seventh day. As the Sabbath was kept in Eden before the fall, so it will be observed eternally in the new earth after the restitution. The Sabbath is to be celebrated now and for all eternity by GOD’s people.

For as the new heavens and new earth which I will make shall remain before Me says the Lord, so shall your descendants and your name remain. And it shall come to pass that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another all flesh shall come to worship before Me says the Lord.

Q

7D10.) Does the 7th Day Sabbath serve as memorial to Israel’s deliverance out of Eyptian slavery?

A

NO. It was made for everyman. Sabbath keeping is an identifier of GOD’S people.

And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your GOD brought you out from there by a mighty hand and outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your GOD commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

Q

7D11.) Does the 7th Day Sabbath serve as a memorial to the resurrection of Jesus?

A

NO! The 7th Day Sabbath is a memorial to creation. Baptism is a memorial to the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Therefore we are buried with Him, through baptism into death, that just as, Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Q

Yes

A

The day first established at the Creation: the seventh day (Friday sundown to Saturday sundown); the day reiterated in Exodus 16 and again at Mount Sinai (Exodus 20): the seventh day; the day that Jesus Himself kept and defended (Matthew 12:8, 12; Luke 6:9): the seventh day; and the day that the apostle Paul kept (Acts 17:2): the seventh day—that is the day depicted in the Bible for weekly rest.
Not Sunday.
Does it matter? Well, it matters if it matters to God. Indeed, the keeping of the seventh-day Sabbath is one of the Ten Commandments, God’s holy law—so it must matter very much to Him
