  2. stablilize matrix band w/ finger and loosen both nuts on the retainer
  3. continue to stabilize band and amalgam w/ index finger and remove retainer
  4. remova matrix band from uninvolved contact while stabilizing restoration w/ index finger
  5. removed wedge w/ cotton pliers
  6. remove matrix band between amalgam and adjacent tooth
