The teenager begins to make choices about adult roles, and with the resolution of this identity crisis a sense of fidelity or membershipr with society is integrated into the personality (teenage years)
Stage 5, Self-identity vs. Role Diffusion
The young adult establishes an intimate relationship with a partner and family; the capacity to love is achieived (young adulthood)
Stage 6, Intimacy and Solidarity vs. Isolation
The mature adult reflects on hisher own value, and shares with the younger generation the knowledge gained; wisdom is acquired (maturity)
Stage 8, Integrity vs. Despair
The child gains social skills and a gender role identity; a sense of purpose is integrated into the personality (preschool age)
Stage 3, Initiative vs. Guilt
The child realizes that he/she can control bodily functions; self-controlled will is integrated into personality (2 to 4 years)
Stage 2, Autonomy vs. Doubt and Shame
The child gains a sense of security through peers and gains mastery over activities of his/her age group; a feeling of competency is integrated into the personality (elementary school age)
Stage 4, Industry vs. Inferiority
The adult finds security in the contribution of his/her chose personal/professional roles; the capacity to care is achieved (middle adulthood)
Stage 7, Generativity vs. Self-absorption
The infant/baby realizes that survival and comfort needs wil be met; hope is integrated into the personality (birth to 18 months)
Stage 1, Basic Trust vs. Mistrust
