What is the epidemiology of Eczema in Kids

A

Can affect 15-20% of kids
○ In babies – More often on face
○ In older kids – In the creases, back of knees and elbows.

  • Dry skin
    • Itchy
    • If they scratch it can bleed
    • Infection
    • Cracked skin

A

Non pharmacological interventions

  • Non bio washing powder for clothes
  • No bath oils or salts
  • Soft clothing
  • Seaweed

What are the pharmaceutical interventions for Eczema?

A

Mild eczema

* No pharmacological 
* Mild – Emolient cream ideally every 3-4 hours

Moderate

* As mild plus
* Topical corticosteriod e,g, hydrocortisone 0.1-2.5%

How do you know how much corticosteriod cream to apply?

A
  • Finger tip units e.g.
      ○ 1.5 finger tip units for a 3-5 year olds face
      ○ 3.5 finger tip units for a 3-5 year olds back
    • User more as they get older.

What else may you prescribe?

A

Antihistamine especially in the summer when there is more pollon around.
* Non sedating ideally
* Sedating antihistamine at night

What if secondary skin infection?

A

Systemic flucloxacillin first line as skin infection likely to be a staph infection

	○ Or Erythromycin (If pencillin allergy)

Only use topical antibiotics if the infection is very localised and for no more than 2/52.
