B - Analysis, Thermal Effects and Cornering Flashcards
1
Q
What force can cause a train to overturn?
A
Cornering Force
2
Q
What is the formula for lateral acceleration?
A
Lateral acceleration;
(V^2)/R
(Velocity squared)/Radius
3
Q
What is a Cant ?
A
A Cant is a cross fall applied to the track to counter overturning (think of sides of a Nascar race track being slightly sloped into the turn)
4
Q
What has to be balanced when designing rail systems?
A
The Cant needs to be designed appropriately so that a fast train can take a corner safely whilst potentially having to stop on a corner.
5
Q
What is the recommended maximum value of Cant?
A
150mm
