Chapter 9 Altimeter Setting Procedures Flashcards
What is the objective of altimeter settings?
To provide terrain clearance in all phases of flight
What is the transition altitude and who sets it?
Where you change to SPS (set by the state)
What is the lowest the transition altitude usually is?
3000ft
Where can you find the transition altitude?
AIP and the approach plate (NOT in ATIS)
What must be done if two close proximity aerodromes have two different transition altitudes?
Use the highest
Who sets the transition level?
ATC (approach controller)
When shall the crew be provided with the TL?
- prior to reaching the level
- in approach clearance
- when requested by the pilot
Define the TL?
The first available FL
To what figures is the TL and TA rounded to respectively? *****
TL = 500ft TA = 1000ft
When is QNH given to the crew?
- in taxi clearance
- when approaching airfield in the clearance to enter the traffic circuit
How is QNH rounded?
Rounded down to the nearest hPa
What is the required accuracy of an altimeter?
+/- 60ft between 0-30,000ft
How are QNH and QFE figures shown on charts respectively?
QNH = bold QFE = non bold and in brackets
How many altimeters must be set to QNH before takeoff?
1
When can you change to SPS before reaching TA?
When cleared by ATC to a FL
