Chemotherapy: Definitions and Examples Flashcards
1
Q
Induction therapy
A
- Initial tx used to reduce a cancer
- Usually followed by chemo, radiation, or hormone therapy to treat residual cancer
2
Q
Adjuvant therapy
A
- Another tx used together with induction therapy
- Assists primary treatment
3
Q
Neoadjuvant therapy
A
- Tx given as a first step to shrink a tumor before surgery
- Can be chemo, radiation or hormone therapy
4
Q
Consolidation therapy
A
- Tx that is given after cancer has disappeared following initial therapy
- Kills residual cancer cells
5
Q
Maintenance therapy
A
-Tx given to help keep cancer from returning after it has disappeared
6
Q
Alkylating Agents MOA and examples
A
- Cause DNA cross linking & strand breaks
- Most are cytotoxic to both resting & dividing cells
-Cyclophosphamide, cisplatin, etc. etc. etc.
7
Q
Antimetabolites MOA and examples
A
- Exert antitumor activity by acting as pseudo-substrates for essential enzymatic rxns
- Associated with secondary AML
-Methotrexate, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), cytarabine
8
Q
Antitumor Antibiotics
A
- Intercalate adjacent DNA nucleotides, interrupting replication & transcription to cause strand breaks
- Cell cycle non-specific
-Ex: Doxorubicin, bleomycin
9
Q
Plant alkaloids
A
- Naturally occurring nitrogenous bases
- Most inhibit cell division through inhibition of mitotic spindle formation
Vinca –> Vincristine, vinblastine
Taxanes –> Paclitaxel
10
Q
Common ADRs with chemo agents
A
- N/V
- anorexia
- Alopecia
- Myelosuppression
- Some classes associated with secondary malignancies
