CBD Basics Flashcards
(37 cards)
What does CBD stand for?
Cannabidiol (can-nuh-buh-dai-uhl)
What plant is CBD derived from?
CBD is derived from the Cannabis plant, of which there are 3 varieties: C. indica, C. sativa, and C. ruderalis.
What is the difference between cannabis and hemp?
Hemp is a specific variety of C. sativa that is higher in CBD and lower in THC. It has been grown for many uses and for hundred of years by many cultures. A couple things made from hemp are rope, clothes, sails, and even food.
What compounds do hemp contain?
Hemp contains the same compounds as other cannabis varieties, but generally have more CBD and less THC.
Is hemp legal?
The 2018 Farm Bill considers C. sativa plants with less than 0.3 percent THC as hemp or industrial hemp. Producers can grow it legally across most of the U.S., subject to strict regulations. Idaho and Mississippi do not allow the cultivation of hemp despite the 2018 Farm Bill removing hemp (THC
Is CBD legal?
Hemp-derived CBD products with less than 0.3% THC are legal federally but still illegal under some state laws. Cannabis-derived CBD products, on the other hand, are illegal federally but legal under some state laws. Hemp-derived CBD is legal in New York state.
Do any products at Clean Market contain more than .3% THC?
No, under NY state law, products containing more than .3% THC must be sold at licensed cannabis dispensaries. Adult cannabis use was legalized in NY state March 31, 2021, but is subject to quantity regulations. Clean Market only sells hemp-derived CBD products which are legal federally.
How old does someone need to be to purchase CBD?
18 years old in NY state. Sometimes 21 if puchasing from a dispensary.
What’s the difference between cannabis and marijuana?
Both words refer to the same plant, but due to the racist and anti-cannabis history of the word marijuana, the cannabis industry prefers the term cannabis.
What does THC stand for?
tetrahydrocannabinol
Do CBD products contain THC?
Full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD contain trace amounts of THC (less than .3%) as well at the 240 other phytochemicals found in the cannabis plant.
Can CBD products with less than .3% THC cause a “high?”
No, CBD is non-psychoactive and non-euphoric, but the addition of the trace amount of THC can increase the therapeutic effects of the CBD.
What are the three kinds of CBD?
- CBD isolate
- broad-spectrum CBD
- full-spectrum CBD
What is CBD isolate?
CBD isolate, like the name suggests, is the isolated CBD, without any trace compounds, phytochemicals, or THC.
Will CBD isolate show up on a drug test?
Since THC is what is measured in a drug test it shouldn’t show up so long as the product labeling is accurate, but the newness and popularity of CBD has led to many low-quality products and false advertising so anyone subject to drug testing should be careful with CBD.
What is broad-spectrum CBD?
Broad spectrum CBD consists of several cannabis plant compounds, but it is typically entirely free of THC. That said, there may sometimes be trace amounts of THC in broad spectrum CBD products.
What is full-spectrum CBD?
Full spectrum CBD contains other cannabinoid compounds from the cannabis plant, low levels of THC, and terpenes.
What are terpenes?
Terpenes are the aromatic compounds found in plants that give them their unique scent and flavor. Cannabis is particularly high in terpenes which gives full-spectrum CBD its unique flavor.
What is the benefit of full-spectrum CBD?
Reliable and trusted research has pointed to the existence of an “entourage effect” where the inclusion of other cannabis plant compounds increases the effect of the CBD.
Who should be recommended CBD?
CBD is a safe, effective, and natural treatment for many conditions and issues. Insomnia, inflammation and pain, and anxiety are some of the most popular uses of CBD.
What CBD dose is the right amount?
5 mg or less would be a “microdose” but very few people will notice anything less than 5 mg. In general for a non-THC user: 10-15mg for daytime use 20-30 mg for insomnia and relaxation 50mg or more for pain
Frequent THC users will generally need to increase their CBD dose to have the same benefits of a non-THC user.
No upper limit is currently known for CBD but any new user should start with a low dose (perhaps 10mg) and slowly increase over time.
Users may notice a tolerance developing to CBD resulting in needing to increase dose but this tolerance curve should ultimately flatten.
Weight and height factor into dosing as well.
Is CBD FDA-regulated?
No, and it is extremely common for CBD products to be innaccurately labeled, so it is important to buy from a responsible producer.
How do you know if a CBD product is safe and reliable?
Going through a trusted retailor (ie Clean Market) and checking that the producer provides a 3rd party COA (certificate of analysis) are important things to look for when purchasing CBD products, especially online.
What is hempseed oil and C. sativa seed oil?
These products are made from the seeds, not the cannabis plant and contain neither CBD nor THC. The similarity in names is often used to delude consumers into purchasing products at a high price point without the same benefits of CBD products.
