9.sulfur dioxide Flashcards
etiology of so2 poisoning
- fuel combustion
- oil refining
- volcanic activity
- preservatives of fruits/vegetables
pathogenesis of so2 poisoning
Upon inhalation, sulfur dioxide reacts with water in the mucosa of the respiratory tract to form sulfurous acid (H2SO3),
which is highly soluble in water and efficiently absorbed in the upper respiratory tract.
Sulfur dioxide exhibits direct irritant properties.
clinical manifestation of so2 poisoning
1.ocular: irritation and lacrimation, corneal damage
2. dermal: itching, skin rashes
3. respiratory - coughing, sneezing, runny nose
in higher concentration : laryngeal and upper airway edema
with increased airflow resistance
diagnosis of so2 poisoning
- clinical examination: work environmental history and symptoms
- odor - pungent
- abgs: respiratory alkalosis
- sulfite levels in blood
- CXR
treatment of so2 poisoning
- immediate removal
- decontamination with water
- topical application of sodium bicarbonate
- o2 therapy and bronchodilators
medical expertise of so2 poisoning
1.modern technologies to reduce so2 in air
2. protective equipment
