Absorption Of Triglycerides Flashcards

1
Q

Describe and explain how triglycerides are absorbed

A
  1. Micelles (bile salts + monoglycerides + fatty acids) break down releasing the monoglycerides and fatty acids which can easily diffuse through the cell surface membrane of the epithelial cell of ileum
  2. Monoglycerides and fatty acids are re-synthesised into triglycerides in the smooth endoplamsic reticulum
  3. They associate with cholesterol and lipoproteins in the Golgi to form chylomicrons
  4. Chylomicrons move out of the epithelial cells by exocytosis and enter lacteals (lymphatic capillaries)
  5. Pass through the lymphatic vessels and into the bloodstream
