A
- he wanted to rebuild the ancient roman empire
- many european powers had land in africa so he wanted some
- rich in natural resources, useful during depression
- he thought the LoN wouldn’t intervene (manchuria, corfu)

italian and abyssinian soldiers fought at wal wal, 150 were killed

italy entered abyssinia despite moral condemnation from the league, italy used chemical weapons

A
britain and france met with mussolini in secret and agreed it could keep parts of abyssinia. details were leaked to the press, and there was outrage, but it was too late

in may 1936, italy left the league, and it lost respect

- economic sanctions against italy but they didn’t include steel, coal or oil, and italy could trade with other people (eg USA)
