What happened in the case of R V Ahuliwalia (1993) ?

A

Ahuliwalia suffered abuse and violence from her husband for years. She poured petrol in a bucket, lit a candle and set her husband on fire. Her husband had died from the injuries, she pleaded manslaughter on the grounds that she did not intend to kill him, only to inflict pain. She also pleaded the defence of provocation on grounds of her treatment during the marriage, she was convicted of murder but appealed the decision.

FGM key facts:

A

It involves partial or total removal of external features of female genitalia.
The practice has no benefits and causes severe problems during childbirth and day-to-day life.
More than 200 million girls and women alive today have been cut in 30 countries across the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
FGM is carried out on girls between infancy - 15.
In the UK FGM has been illegal since the Female Circumcision Act (1985)
