Acid/base Flashcards
Electrolytes that dissociate to release hydrogen ions in water
Acids
Substances that release ions that can combine with hydrogen ions
Bases
Electrolytes formed by the reaction between an acid and a base
Salts
Indicates the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution
PH scale
A pH of seven indicate equal concentrations of H+ and OH- Example water
Neutral
A pH of less than seven indicates a greater concentration of H+ than OH-
Acidic
A pH greater than seven indicates a higher concentration of OH- than H+
Basic (alkaline)
PH between 7.35 and 7.45
Normal range for blood
Occurs when blood pH drops to 7.0 - 7.3
Acidemia
Occurs when blood pH rises to 7.5 through 7.8
Alkalemia
Makes a person feel disoriented and fatigued
Acidosis
Makes a person feel dizzy and agitated
Alkalosis
