Acids + Alkalis Flashcards
What is neutralisation?
Neutralisation is when an acid and alkali are added together to make salt and water
Why do we use bicarbonate of soda on a bee sting
The venom of a bee sting is acidic and bicarbonate of soda is an alkaline so we use it to neutralise the sting
Name 2 acids found in foods we eat
Ethanoic and citric acid
What is citric acid found in?
Fruits such as oranges and lemons
What is ethanoic acid found in?
Vinegar
How is acid rain formed ?
Carbon dioxide is dissolved into the rain particles
Why do we treat soil with lime?
If your soil becomes too acidic you add lime which is an alkali to it to neutralise it
What do you use to neutralise hydrochloric acid in your stomach ?
Indigestion tablets such as antacid
What do you use to neutralise a wasps sting and why?
Vinegar because a wasps sting is alkaline
Why don’t we use bicarbonate of soda?
A wasps sting is alkaline and bicarbonate of soda is also alkaline
What do you do if you spill concentrated acid on your skin?
You pour cold water on your skin to dilute the acid
Why?
Diluting the acid makes it less harmful
Sometimes a bottle of concentrated sulphuric acid is placed on a plastic tray why?
Concentrated sulphuric acid is very corrosive and any drips that reach the bottom would cause damage to the bench its placed on
Why plastic?
The plastic is not damaged by the acid
What is to be hazardous mean?
To be potentially harmful or seriously dangerous
