Q

How to test for carbonate ions?

A

1) Add an acid (e.g.: HCL) to a sample.
2) If a fizzing reaction occurs, this means a gas has been formed.
3) To test the gas for carbonate ions, bubble it through limewater (calcium hydroxide) as limewater is a test for carbon dioxide ( a product of a reaction between carbonate ions and dilute acids)
4) If the lime water turns milky and cloudy then carbon dioxide is present and so are carbonate ions.
